One of the best things about exploring the island is discovering how different each coastal area can feel.
When visiting Madeira for the first time, one of the things that may surprise you is how different the island’s beaches can be. Madeira is not known for long stretches of white sand, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of beautiful places to enjoy the sea.
You may also be surprised by the water temperature, which stays relatively mild throughout the year, making it possible to enjoy the ocean in every season. Thanks to Madeira’s amazing climate, it is not unusual to see locals heading to the beach even during the cooler months of the year.
From natural volcanic beaches and calm swimming areas to seaside complexes with pools and facilities, each beach offers a different experience. And because the island is relatively small, you can easily include a few of them in your itinerary while exploring different parts of Madeira.
If it’s your first time on the island, these are some of the beaches we recommend adding to your trip.
Madalena do Mar Beach
Located on the sunny south coast of Madeira, Madalena do Mar is a great place to enjoy the ocean while also experiencing the relaxed atmosphere of a small coastal village.
This beach is made up of calhau, Madeira’s characteristic volcanic round pebbles, with the sea right in front of the village. There is no entrance fee, making it an easy stop to add to your day of exploring the south coast.
One of the things we particularly like about Madalena do Mar is how easy it is to spend a few hours here, there are bars and restaurants nearby, so you can stop for a drink, have lunch or simply enjoy something by the sea.
It is also a beautiful place to stay until later in the day, the south coast is known for its sunsets, and Madalena do Mar offers a fantastic setting to watch the sun go down over the Atlantic.
If you are driving along the south coast, this is definitely a place worth adding to your route.

Lido
If you are staying in or around Funchal and want a more structured place to enjoy the sea, Lido is one of the easiest options.
Unlike a traditional beach, Lido Bathing Complex is a large seaside bathing complex with several ways to access the ocean, there are different entrances into the sea, so you can choose the one that feels most comfortable, without having to deal with the typical volcanic pebbles found on many of Madeira’s natural beaches.
The complex also has a large swimming pool and a smaller pool for children, making it a practical option for families or anyone who prefers swimming in a pool rather than directly in the ocean.
Another advantage is the facilities. This beach complex has bars, changing rooms, bathrooms, beach umbrellas and much more, meaning you can comfortably spend several hours here without needing to leave.
Entrance to the complex is paid, but in return you have access to a well-maintained seaside area with plenty of facilities.
Its location also makes it very convenient if you are staying in Funchal, you can combine a visit to Lido with a walk along the promenade, a meal nearby or an afternoon exploring the city.

Santa Cruz Beach
On the east side of Madeira, Santa Cruz is home to Praia das Palmeiras, a seaside complex that offers a different way of enjoying the Atlantic.
Here you will find two swimming pools, one larger and one smaller, as well as several ways to enter the sea through piers and stairs.
The sea around Santa Cruz is often beautifully clear, and the combination of the ocean, pools and views of the coast makes this a great place to spend a relaxing day.
Another advantage is that the beach is free to access. There are also bars and bathrooms nearby, so you have the basic facilities you need for a comfortable day by the sea.
Praia das Palmeiras is usually a quieter option compared with some of the more popular bathing areas around the island, which can make it particularly enjoyable if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere.
And since Santa Cruz is close to the airport, it can also be an easy place to visit at the beginning or end of your trip, depending on your plans.

Ribeira Brava Beach
If you are looking for somewhere a little more peaceful, Praia da Ribeira Brava is another beach worth considering.
Located on the south coast, Ribeira Brava has a more relaxed atmosphere and is a great place to slow down after exploring the surrounding area.
The beach itself has a combination of volcanic pebbles and black sand, with access to the ocean from the shore. The sea here can feel particularly calm, making it a nice option if you simply want to spend some time by the water without planning a whole day around the beach.
There are bars and other facilities nearby, so you can easily combine a swim with a coffee, lunch or a drink by the sea.
During the summer, the beach is also supervised, giving visitors an additional level of comfort when swimming.
Ribeira Brava is also a good stop if you are exploring the south coast by car, you can take some time to walk around the town, enjoy the seafront and then continue your journey towards other parts of the island.
